The Dark Side

So it was early May and I was due to get my full lic back in June, every day I had been putting up the road past the Sydney dealer on my stupid p’s restricted Chinese chopper daily….Yep I truly looked like the bear picture posted elsewhere.

Originally I went in to check out the victory high ball, because Polaris for some reason give service personnel and veterans a better warranty and some extras when you buy, but as I walked into the dealership, there she was, dark and overpowering, much like that hooker at, oh wait, another story for another time.

Anyway just like that hooker, I walked straight up and mounted her, Betty her name was, but I wouldn’t find that out till we met again.  It was love/lust, and her sheer curves that had me.  I didn’t even take her for a ride that day, as I knew she had been with many others, but I could tell her balance was perfect, and her engine had many a good write up, so I took the plunge and married her younger untouched twin sister unseen.

Just like her older hooker sister, she took me for more than she was worth, and I got all the options, why hold back on such a fine piece of machine….

Well 10 June came, 7am, lined up at the RMS, doors open lic reinstated, I caught ataxi to the dealer to meet my promised Betty, but I was too early so I had to wait sipping on macca's coffee, feeling like a junkie waiting got the score to arrive….I had already handed back my mail order bike thanks to NCAT, she turned out to be a lesbian (lemon) and the pimp paid me handsomely as I handed back that worn out girl.

Well just like the showroom ho, Betty the younger sister was exceptional, she had me wrapped around in her arms the minute we hit walking pace, I knew I would never want to let go, and when I got out onto the street, she showed everyone in Sydney peak hour just what she could do to me, and I could do to her as I dropped the throttle and drifted up the road, opps forgot, new tyres!!….

Well the story ends much like the playboy books of old.  She’s now my regular gal and we have fun together every day, wet, dry, lube on the road, or not…

Now to be honest, she has been a great ride, yep you might hear me go on about the clutch being a bit funky when it’s cold, but boy is she perfect.  I am so glad I put the apes on her as the stock bars would have been painful for a daily commute, but the 16” allows me to lane filter and not think about side mirror slams…

Her family has been great to me too, I took her in for a check-up to make sure she was still ok after the first weekend (yep 800km in 2 days) and she was divine, they even fixed up the tiny scratch where I just couldn’t hold her up after a biq squat session at the gym….Tip for newbies, no awkward hill parks with fatigued quads, if you think dropping is embarrassing, try lifting her on your own with legs that had been squatting 150kgs for an hour!

Anyway, would I change anything no, well maybe stage 2 cams but after the write ups I am holding back a few months.  But the stage 1 and high flow air made all the difference, I ride with a patched club although I am not a member and even those seasoned brothers have been impressed.  I notice that I can take corners a lot harder than my HD brothers, brake faster, and pull away just that little bit more.

Would I recommend a DH, absolutely, would I recommend an Indian as an all-weather daily ride, HELL FNG YEAH.  She has by far been the best bike I have ever owned and not just because it’s my first real bike after my long court induced vacation.

Will I go back to a HD or another brand, well that’s up to Polaris, but as far as the bike is concerned, keep giving me babies like that to ride like I stole, and I will keep buying, provided I get the ongoing support of people like Chris in Sydney.

So are there down sides, Yep, my thoughts would be

  • Only the Victory brand has exclusive offers for veterans.  For whatever reason despite asking numerous times given the same ownership I kept getting a resounding NO!  WTF, I could have had a heap of us come it and buy up????????

  • Go stage 1 on day 1
  • Don’t do windshields
  • Don’t do std bars, not if you need to traverse city streets
  • Don’t buy it if you want bags, go a chieftain and scale things off it, I think it would have been cheaper and a better solution than my aftermarkets
  • Don’t keep the chrome, matt black all round is a 5-10min wash and citrus juice polish (not really a polish but it is citrus juice and literally dishwashing liquid I use, no bike products)
  • Really consider heated grips, as without the windshield you may want it

My final parting comment, bikes like these are not to be kept, and babied, I hear all the time, I can’t ride her, I’m trying to keep the km’s down for re-sale.  That’s like saying I don’t bang my Mrs much I am keeping her in good nick for the next guy, seriously WTF!

This bike is unstoppable, and will have s*** house resale value because it’s not a HD so, if a DH is for you, cause you like the bad ass look, then be a bad ass, and ride it all year in all weather, and like you stole it, it won’t disappoint, it won’t hurt you, but be a little cautious in the wet as it does at times feel like I am riding over ball bearings

Anyone want specifics, instead of this soft porn episode let me know and I will be more specific, but this Dark Horse has probably made me a customer of Polaris for good.

[eek] Despite the scary start to your story, great write up mate. Glad you are wrapped with your Darkhorse. I agree with you... if you bought the bike, ride it and don't worry about the mileage... Keeping wife 'fresh' for the next guy was funny! [smile] Re: Veteran's discount - I am pretty sure that $1,000 off applies to both Indian & Victory. In fact, I have seen their hand outs.

Good write up Faceonahead!

Similar story here except for me I had been looking at Indians and intended to buy at some point when I sold a car and was a cash buyer.

But... I was on the Indian US email list and got the launch announcement. I was instantly hooked from the pictures in the same way you were in the store. I rang Indian in Melbourne (G'day Scotty) before the model was even launched here and arranged to put a deposit down. I had to wait months to actually get the bike (my avatar on the site is from an email that Scotty pic sent me when it arrived in Melbourne and had a sold sticker with my name on it on the headlight) and then ship it Perth. Still under finance as the car is still not sold.

I agree with everything you say about the bike except I like the low bars, actually I don't like the bars they pull back way to far and while I have got used to them they always seemed more like a tiller than handlebars to me (I prefer them to mini apes as a personal preference - I don't run the traffic gauntlet very often). Might look at beach bars or Springfield bars one day.

I also would not pay the price for the heated grips and my wife got me a set of great quality aftermarket saddlebags for a good price.

Agree - ride it like you stole it and ride it like you bought it because you wanted to go bike riding. If you want resale value go and see Chiefy at Zorro's and buy a classic pre 53 Indian.

I too queried the veteran discount and was told by PA that it doesn't apply in Oz; only the USA!

I just had a call from the new principal at sydney as they apparently have been challenged over some paperwork not completed correctly.  Anyway I bailed him up and said well, why is it there is a "hero" (f@cked name) pack for victory and not indian when its same ownership.  He sounded like a stuttering rapper....Anyway he promised to have an answer for me when I him later this week

So just a minor update, got it in June now have 7000km on it, and still love it to bits, I really cant fault the DH, maybe just the stock tyres in the wet seem a bit slippy but otherwise if I had to do it all over again, knowing all I know now, I would, and wouldn't hesitate.  I haven't had the major issues some have stated on here, but I also understand that we are but a minor voice of all TS111 owners so perhaps I am just part of the majority, overall happy owners.  I just hope if I ever have serious warranty issues Polaris dont taint that opinion as no matter how good or how much I lover her, if the company doesn't back their goods, I will move on in a few years, so far though teh Sydney dealership being my face of polaris have won me over time and time again

One thing I am hoping someone can help me with though is does the Indian range have standard ABS or Corner assisted ABS.  I ask as I could swear it has corner assisted ABS as the other day I was being a dickhead and hit a corner I didnt know very well and way to hard for conditions, and it had a concrete barrier iun middle of road, so when i started going extremly wide, I had to lock  up or play squish and every time I thought, thats it Im screwed as the bike started to drop, I swear eitehr CABS kicked in (as I could feel the ABS shudders the whole time)  or an indian god from above just gave it a nudge back up....Either way I was lucky, and I am keen toknow if its technology that helped me out, or sheer arse and luck

Hey Face,

Standard ABS is mandatory on all bikes sold in Australia these days.  As for 'Cornering ABS', no.  Indians don't have that feature.  I was coming around the corner and cyclist came around from other side and turned in front of me.  I was leaning over (mid-corner), I pressed down a little too hard on the rear brake and locked up momentarily before ABS released the grip, as I took pressure off the brake paddle to regain traction.  Rear of my bike stepped out but that was as exciting as it got.

Bikes with Cornering ABS will not 'step out'.

I know this is an old thread, but just gotta say... great review...

I have a RM, and tend to ride it fairly stripped down (topbox and panniers off). But the appeal of a fully-blacked out DH, stripped down to nothing and ready to go like the clappers is something I have felt from the day they released it. Its just mean and angry-looking and a thing of beauty.

Not sure why Dark Horses will now be available in white, though... the grey headdress on black tank is just part of the DH storyline. But then again, I never understood why they came with chrome pipes that pretty much every DH owner replaces immediately.

I hope she is still treating you well... the DH, not the hooker.

Still going well, I keep having to change my rubber, and lube her often given how much I thrash it, in fact I had to bore her out to 116 as she just couldn't cope with my demands...Luckily she is not a clacker, or complainer and always gets into action when I tap her and throw a leg over

Sweet read Face,
If I didn’t already buy the DH, your perspective would have swayed me😂. Kinda understand the looks I get from the misses now when I sit in the garage staring at the bike.
