Hi Folks,

I have had an interesting experience the other day that I thought I would share with you all.

I was provided with a web site address from google that tracked all of the activity that my phone carried out for quite some time.

the link is
http://www.google.com.au/maps/timeline

What I have found is that unless you explicitly turn this information off, your device will be monitored and all of your movements recorded by google maps.

For example.

Please be aware that this is occuring.  You are able to use it to your advantage if you know about it but if you don't know about it there can be some security concerns around this behaviour.

Thanks for that link. It's worrying that everything is recorded like that. I only turn my phone location on when I'm using it as a GPS but sometimes I forget to turn it off.

These two pics show it off well.
The first is all the data it has from me, every red dot shows a place I have stopped - at many of them it asks me to rate it etc.
The second pic is my tracking for one day. It shows where I have driven and where I have cycled when carrying my phone.

If the phone is there, they've got the info.

No doubt Google will say that this information is only available to the user.  😏

I logged on to the link Crash provided, but nothing came up, BUT I log out of everything Google, Amazon and any other mega-corporation accounts and apps.  So, my movements are not associated with my account but no doubt, all that information is collected and stored regardless.  The most obvious way they use that information is to predict the drive time when we use Google Maps for navigation.  They have real live data from hundreds of people, and when they don't have that information, they have historical data from the day, weeks and months before to make a prediction.

The less obvious way Google might use this information is to create profiles of everyone.  They will be able to predict where you will be next Wednesday at 3pm because you have been to that same location for the past 10 weeks out of 12 weeks. 😳😬

Even if you don't have Google account, Google can see you and get to know you.  Just like the advertisement for a given motorcycle brand pops-up on banner ads on an unrelated website, Google has ways to track you.  Your IP address, your cache files, your pattern of behaviour.  Add to that; people are willing to let Google listen to them using apps like Google Alexa (Apple Siri equivalent).  More unpredictable your movements are the harder it is for mega-corps to track you.

The upside is, maybe one day, there will be no crimes as everyone is tracked and they know who was where, when.  🙄

I guess the thing that concerns me about this the most is the relative complacency from Google on your information - the approval was probably hidden somewhere in a 15 page conditions of use document that we all say "I agree to" (because how much harm can it cause - really) that turns all of this stuff on, but they don't tell you how to turn it off.  I have turned all mine off now but let's hope that the damage has not already been done.  Of course, the longer it's turned off the less relevant the historical information becomes.

Hello? Giuseppe's Pizza?
No sir, it's now Google Pizza.
I'm sorry, it appears that I have the wrong number.
No sir. Google bought Giuseppe's Pizza.
OK then, can you take my order please?
Yes sir, would you want the usual?
The usual? Do you know me?
According to our caller ID, the last 12 times you ordered a pizza with cheese, sausage and crust. Is that correct?
That is correct.
May I recommend ricotta with sun dried tomato?
No, I hate vegetables.
But your cholesterol is 7.4
How do you know that?
Through the subscribers guide. We have your blood tests for the last 7 years.
What! Okay, but I don't want that type of pizza. I already have taken my medicine.
You haven't taken the medication regularly. 4 months ago you only purchased 30 tablets from Drugs Online.
I bought more from another pharmacy.
Sorry, it's not showing up on your credit card.
I paid for it in cash!
Our data says that you did not withdraw that much cash according to your bank statements.
I have another source of cash.
This is not showing on your last tax form, unless you got it from an undeclared income source.
BLOODY HELL? stuff Google, stuff Facebook, stuff Twitter and stuff What's App. I'm off to an island that doesn't have the internet.
I understand sir why you may be upset. However you will need to renew your passport, it expired 5 weeks ago.
Cheers, Kim.

Read his book Danse Macabre,  that should give you good insight into his way of thinking.
