Hair dryer method worked well for me so I thought I will share it.

Thanks V-Twin. I asked them to remove it on my first service but they declined because of some policy. Now I can do it myself.

Copied this method and used a bit of possum piss (WD-40) to clean up the glue. Worked a treat. Thanks for the upload.

Hi all

I am taking a safety/warning sticker off the tank of my Scout.  I have removed most of the sticker but left with lots of residue.  What is the safest way to remove the residue without damaging the paintwork?

I have personally always used Eucalyptus Oil on a micro-fibre cloth. No pressure, just rub on the residue back and forth (NEVER in circles) until it starts to remove it on its own. Quick and easy and always worked for me. Can be bought at any chemist.

Exactly what a mate told me, but I didn't trust him as he is a Harley rider.  Eucalyptus Oil it is!

Just a drop of metho will remove the residue and follow with a water rinse.

Eucalyptus oil will stain the paint if you leave it on for too long.

That's BS! And you don't leave it on you wipe the residue off, then wipe/clean the area anyway. Metho will strip paint before Eucalyptus oil will do anything to it.

Would most likely have an impact on the finish (ie. polish) that is used on the bike.
I used Eucalyptus oil on mine with no ill affects.  Agree with CHF10 in that you are unlikely to leave it on for too long.  You are trying to get the gum off from the sticker, you aren't going to leave residue hanging around (IMO) - you are going to clean it up straight away.

Thanks. I have been meaning to do this for a while and had forgotten the hair dryer trick.

Yep both metho and wd40 are better than eucalyptus. And respectfully, I doubt if most would be aware of the damage you cause, it’s unlikely you have the equipment necessary to look at paint with the same detail I do.

The best way is induction, removes the sticker and all residue in a few seconds with no chemicals.

Don't want to argue (but I will say one last thing) I've been using Eucalyptus Oil for removing sticky residue my whole life without detrimental effects. At the same time I've been detailing cars and bikes to a much higher standard than most and almost went professional but didn't want to lose the love of it. I have trophies from car shows for Best Paint. Never any I'll effects from Eucalyptus oil.

So let's put this down to, each to their own.

I won't argue either but all I'll say is that the highest qualified detailers have been removing eucalyptus damage for many, many years.

Rarely do they remove all the damage.

In my industry we apply methylated spirits to high quality paint, every single day. Myself I would average around 20-30 times each day, in the past 12 years never have I damaged paint by using it. We do this because it is proven to evaporate before it can cause any damage, unlike eucalyptus oil which remains long after you wipe it off.

For anyone that chooses to use Eucalyptus, always remove it with a warm soap wash - or even better, metho, then a warm wash.

Absolutely, and one based on evidence and shared by qualified tradespeople that do this for a living.

Aaaaaanyway, enough of the nonsense BS. Back to Fatscout's question. Just use Eucalyptus Oil mate. You CAN'T go wrong with it. It will remove ALL residue quickly, simply and cheaply and WITHOUT doing ANY damage whatsoever. Glad I could help you mate. Ignore the haters. 😃

My advice is based on EXPERT knowledge and I know what I'm talking about. The fact someone has to personally attack me only goes to show they have no basis in fact for their opinions. The facts speak for themselves. Eucalyptus oil works VERY well and WILL NOT do ANY damage whatsoever. Just like it hasn't done for me for the past 25 years!

Let’s take it down a notch fellas. 🙉

We all have our opinions and beliefs and it’s great we can share them with others.  Let’s leave it at that.

Lol trust me VTwin I haven’t taken any of the comments too seriously. I told a Detailer mate today who specialises on very high end cars and he pissed himself laughing.
We’re all entitled to an opinion so it’s all good.

I had a discussion on another forum. The product Plexus was mentioned which immediately rang a bell as an old company of mine wholesaled that to the Motorsport industry.
I said it was a great product but be careful as it can damage plastic in certain circumstances. As soon as I said that some guy popped up, claimed he used it on everything and it never damaged a thing, therefore I must be wrong.
It didn’t matter that I supplied the product, or had intimate knowledge from the manufacturer, or witnessed it actually cause damage, he couldn’t comprehend that he was just one example of millions, in the case of plexus.
Chf10 is exactly the same, by his own admission he’s just a weekend detailer. For sure odds are most that use his method won’t cause any damage, but it only takes one to leave it on a little too long or not remove it correctly, and once that stuff does stain forget about trying to remove it, especially on paint that hasn’t fully degassed, such as a new motorcycle tank.
The bottom line is his advice was bad and based on poor/no knowledge.
The only detailers that I know that would apply Eucalyptus to paint would make sure it’s heavily diluted and they would remove it correctly. Not undiluted and wipe it off, that’s just silly.

I guess you have a different interpretation of ‘Let’s leave it at that’.

Since another Admin wisely locked this thread, I will leave it as such.
