If you live in Melbourne or Adelaide, the weather has not been kind to us.  It is cold and wet every other day.  Before you know it, your Indian might have been sitting around for couple of months.  So before that happens, I would like to share a few tips with you.  If you ride two or three times a week, minimum of 30min per outing, please ignore this thread.


BATTERY TENDER

Motorcycle batteries are not like car batteries.  They go flat in a relatively short period of time.  It is not uncommon for owners to find that their bike will not start after coming back from a 1 month holiday.  Also, even if your bike starts, your battery would have developed a 'memory' and it will now have lower maximum charge capacity.  I plug my tender in as soon as the engine cools down or the next day when I remember.  


WEEKLY START UP

I have heard several people say that they don't need the tender as they start their bike once or twice a week and let it idle for 5 minutes at a time.  This is actually a very bad practice.  Firstly, the amount of charge depleted from starting the engine cannot be restored by idling the bike for 5 minutes.  So every time you start the bike, the battery is depleting more.  If you rev the engine up while it is cold, you could be damaging your engine as oil has not circulated throughout the engine yet.

Secondly, as your exhaust pipes cool down, condensation turns to a pool of water (usually resting inside the left pipe as that is the lower pipe when the bike is on the side stand).  When you go for a decent ride, all the moisture drys out from the heat. However, exhaust pipes don't get hot enough in 5 minutes so water accumulates and that will accelerate the formation of rust within the exhaust.


CHECK TYRE PRESSURE

When you are ready to go for a ride, do check your tyre pressure.  I find that my bike tyres loose a psi or two every week.  I check my tyre pressure fortnightly.  After the bike has been sitting around for couple of months, it maybe down by 10psi or more.  Which can be dangerous and accelerate tyre wear.

Jeez NOW you tell me... Hahahahahaha. I'm good. Another tip is to leave it full of fuel. Otherwise condensation can form on the inside of the rank and start rusting.

Whats this not riding it stuff?  I have a better set of instructions.  Each day go down, sit on your bike, start it up, go for a ride, rinse and repeat

Thanks V I hate the winter months and if I go into the garage and look at the bike it just upsets me, I must take your advice and check the PSI in the tyres and hope to see you tomoz buddy!!!

...one more tip.  If you have a tyre pump at home, pump to recommend psi (which is specified for cold tires).  But if you have to ride to the servo to check the pressure, add extra 2psi or more (if ridden for couple of kms in cooler months).  If you have to ride many more kms to the servo or on warmer days, may need to add extra 4 psi + to be equivalent of cold tyre psi stated in the owner's manual.

Thanks for the reminder on the tyre issue, get complacent as checking tyres on the Vintage Chief is a pain in the arse due the guards....especially the rear, something must be done..   

Interested to hear from RM rider regarding the loss of PSI..... road command supports this ?

Roadmaster comes with tpms so no need to check manually... just fill up when low.
