I have heard of a Thunder Stroke 111 that had oil consumption issue.  The cause was one of the cylinders had the piston ring fitted up side down (yes, there is a direction).  In your case Dutch, assuming you had zero oil consumption to this point, and that this is something new OR with luck, it might be a one off anomaly.  I guess you will know for sure at the next oil change.

Out of curiosity, do you use Indian oil or some other?

I know most people just use Indian oil but from what I have heard from several knowledgeable people, quality brand of motorcycle oil that meets or exceeds Indian spec is the way to go... some people have reported quieter top end.

Another question Dutch.  Have you used the same brand and model of engine oil throughout the life of the bike?  You didn't change it to another brand/model last time?

Interesting subject.
i have a 2015 Chief Vintage that i service myself. I change the oil every 6 to 7000 ks and during these intervals I keep an eye on the oil level. Before the last service I had noticed that it had dropped to the add line, which I believe is a drop of a litre.
My bike has travel another 7000 ks and has used another litre of oil so I took it to the dealer who carried out a service and put it on a oil consumption test.
l am waiting on the official oil consumption allowance from the factory to determine if I have need for concern.
keen to hear if others have had similar experiences.

I would be very keen to hear what is considered 'acceptable' by Indian on oil consumption.

I suspect most of us take the bike into a workshop to get the oil change done - I certainly never asked but I might at the next service.  There are, however, a few owners who does their own oil change so hopefully they can chip in.

I would assume on a modern engine, any 'noticeable' consumption should be investigated, especially while the warranty is in effect.  Let's say 250ml between service?  A litre seems very high.  It would be interesting to see what a leak down test may reveal.

Keep us posted Smog.

By the way, only oil consumption I have heard of was on one bike that had the piston rings fitted up side down.  I am not kidding, there is a correct way to fit them on our TS111 engines.  Anyway, that was consuming oil from early on. It didn't just start consuming so I am sure that is not it.

Up in North Qld nothing unusual for a large capacity air cooled motor to use a little oil. I am talking Harley here but even my mates bikes will use a bit of oil on say a 1000km run. Mobil V Twin synthetic FYI what I use

What are we talking?  200ml?  500ml?  1litre?  Between service?

Well I just did a 1000km trip on weekend. First 600km sitting around the 125 to 130kph mark and the second part around the 100 to 115kph. I used around 100mil of oil. Bike has 65000km on it.

I'm not a Guru but I know that air cooled bikes use more oil then water cooled (thats where it goes, cooling) bikes.
Same could be said regarding singles, twins and multi-cylinder bikes.

Im consuming oil too on my 2016 Dark Horse , but I note the Indian documentation and videos only talk about topping up if it falls below the low mark on dipstick...I assume its given the readings can be a bit funky depending on how you manage the process of cehcking oil given the semi dry sump and need to run bike for 2 min prior to taking oil reading.

So with that in mind I cant tell you how quickly its burning but over the gap of a service I find I need to top up as it gows below the low mark within that last 1000-1500km mark so might be worth checking to make sure you are not running low low just before a service????

Thanks Robbo for that info.

So based on that reading, your bike is burning 800ml of oil between service.  I have no idea if that is normal or abnormal... but off the top of my head, seems high. 🤔

I have heard an interesting story.  Not specifically about Indian but general practice.  In order to chase better fuel economy, companies are (apparently) building engine components to reduce friction.  Down side of that is oil consumption.  Down side of this is that engines need rebuilding sooner than older, tighter spec engines. 😬

I don't know what the 'full' mark to 'low' mark holds but if engine oil needs to be topped up before scheduled service, off the top of my head, I would think the oil consumption is too high.

Have you mentioned this to your dealer?  Maybe they will put your bike on consumption test?

Yep and when I first got the bike I asked about what things I need to carry on long distance runs out of the dealer network range, and the things I was told was a spare clutch cable and a litre of oil, funnily enough what are the two things everyone talks about on here that seem to be consumed early....cables and oil...

I did raise the consumption and need to top up on all services so far in both dealers (Brisbane and Sydney)  was told that what I had added was within normal ranges

🤔🤔🤔

You are right about the clutch cable... didn't know about the oil consumption until this discussion...  🤔🤔🤔
