Hey guys... I want to replace my stock Chieftain screen with one of the Klock Werks flare ones but I can't decide between 10 inch and 12 inch. Does anyone have any advice?

Klock Werks make the Indian Flare screens but sell them direct a LOT cheaper and with darker tint.

I have the 10 inch but wish I had brought the 12 inch as the 10 doesn't stop the rain hitting you in the face while you are riding.

Slightly off topic... when I test rode a Chieftain before buying my Vintage, I was getting buffeted at 50kph, all the way up to 100kph.  I tried adjusting the standard screen all the way down and all the way up and everything in between. But nothing helpped.  That turned me off Chieftain.  I have ridden a Victory full fairing bike and that had a fixed, 2" screen all the way around.  I was feeling a lot of wind hitting my face all 100kph... much more than riding my naked Vintage (no screen).  I guess the air flow is channeled with full fairing.

I know most people are happy with their OEM screen on Chieftain/RM.  I'm not sure if I have extra tall torso or something to do with a shape of my helmet but I would love to be able find the perfect, replacement screen.  Why?

In September, I will be hiring a Chieftain for 3 weeks in the States.  I need to find a suitable screen to replace rental OEM screen.  If I got buffeted as much as my demo day, I will not be able to ride for long.

I was thinking of trying a shorter screen with a curl on top.  Is that what you guys got from Klock Werks?  Or is it Indian short screen?  Any suggestions as to which might have less buffeting?  10" or 12"?  I'm 6'2" in height for the reference.

Hey mate. I'm also 6'2"... This is my Chieftain story.

So the demo I had for a weekend back in November actually had the large Roadmaster screen on it. All the way down I could see over it fine and up to about 90km/hr had no serious buffeting. Over that, I put it all the way up so I was looking through it but no buffeting at all. Just smooth, quiet cruising with the stereo playing... Not my preferred kind of riding but I could have ridden from Melbourn to Brisbane like that no worries.

Problem is, I don't like the massive screen. Now, my 2016 Chieftain has the short factory screen. I just leave it all the way down at the moment as it doesn't make any difference. From everything I've watched on YouTube and read online about the Klock Werks flare screens they work perfectly. Up to about 5'10", the 10" is fine. Taller people are finding the 12" works for them and when it's all the way up you still see over it. The Indian flare screen is meant to be around 11" and it's also made by Klock Werks for Indian. The biggest difference, PRICE! I can buy a 12" Klock Werks flare screen direct from them and have it at my door in Melbourne for approx. $360 Australian. Indian want $500!!!!!!!!!!!! The other difference is the tint. Buying direct you can get a darker tint than the Indian.

One other very important factor that's often overlooked is that helmet wind buffeting can be caused a lot from wind hitting your legs and deflecting up to your head. For those long stints in the saddle I'll probably also invest in some leather lower inserts for the front crash bars. Combined with the screen I get I'll be completely wind free.

I'm sold on the Klock Werks - just going to wait a bit as I want to do mid risers and stage 2 cams first. I'll be getting the 12".

Here's some reference material for you:

http://www.indianmotorcycles.net/threads/what-did-you-do-to-your-chieftain-today.18737/page-48 (scroll through this - you can see some lowers too)

This is another option I found, a bit cheaper but I didn't like the look as much.

Thanks guys - great information.....
I am 6'4" and ride Vintage Chief with large windscreen..... and have only experienced the "vortex" helmet vibration twice but this was pushing 130Km with no passenger.....
I was looking at getting some crash bar leathers and definitely interested in looking at tinted screen

Hmmmmmm... Just reading more about screens and found Freedom - http://freedomshields.net/Indian_Windshields.html

Theirs are cheaper than Klock Werks and they have taller options too. Just don't have the "wings". They're still flared though which is the most important part. This is their medium tint 12 inch. The bike also has mid rise handlebars. A nice side effect of those is they don't make the screens look as tall as they are.

And here's the response. Can't really pass up that price! The look is good. The tint is good. The sales pitch is good and seems legit. It's less than $250 Australian dollars to my door which is less than half price of the local Indian product. I think I'll give this a go.

Hi Kris,

Sounds awesome….I really think you would like our shield better also….it is thicker, no distortion looking thru it, and more comfortable wind protection.  We hand make every shield so they really turn out nice.

The 12” shield is $154.95 less the 20% off New Year Sale we have going = $123.96

Priority mail is $64

So the total price is $187.96

If this sounds good I have a different secure place you can order since our website will not calculate the shipping by Priority Mail.

Go to [removed link]

Here you can enter all of your shipping information, the total price above, the credit card numbers, and there is a comments box where you can put which shield you would like.

I would then e-mail you an order confirmation and a tracking number when it ships.

I hope this sounds good !!

Thanks Kris !

The height you want really depends on your height.  The proper setting for a windshield should be somewhere south of your eyes and north of the tip of your nose.  I realize on the Chieftain and the RM, the height is variable but you are not.  The 12" might work well.

I have a LRS BattleAxe Recurve on my Roadmaster.  I am 6' (roughly 183 cm) in height.  I purchased a 14" dark tint.  I can move it all over and it works well.  It was substantially cheaper than the Klock Werks and works well.

I got it at Amazon for 93 USD and free shipping.  Not sure what getting it to Oz would cost.
If you go to my new member post, there is a picture of my RM with the screen.

Thanks DrZ

That's the best price I've seen for a screen! Sadly that seller doesn't ship to Australia.

And I can't see your pic - you need to be logged into http://www.indianrider.net to see it.

Really?  I will post a couple of pix here from my laptop.  Hopefully that works.
Please let me know if these didn't come through.

Now...as far as the vendor not wanting to ship to Oz....hmmmmmmm.
What if you had a friend in America who would have it shipped to him to have him reship to Oz?

I would be concerned about the physical safety of the screen but it could be done.
Cost would be the screen cost plus whatever it costs to ship it to Oz.

We can talk if anyone is interested.
